The thread has already been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine as a means of purification and detoxification and so the plant has even obtained an interesting nickname – „the broom for intestines.“ In Japan, Glucomannan is a part of the traditional cuisine, where amongst others, it is used as a thickener. Glucomannan belongs to a group of soluble fibers and it can absorb water up to 50 times of its weight, due to which it is considered one of the most viscous known fibers. Glucomannan is attributed with numerious positive features, and the scientific evidences speak in favor of the most beneficial effects on weight loss and lowering of cholesterol levels. CLINICAL TRIALS PROVED THE EFFECTS The effect of glucomannan on body weight is well documented by the scientific research. The analysis of studies conducted on humans and published in the journal Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicien found that taking glucomannan in doses of 2 to 4 grams can lead to significant weight loss among obese people and people who are overweight. An eight-week clinical trial was conducted on 20 obese people. The were receiving glucomannan and a placebo at a dose of 1 g (two capsules of 500 mg), 1 hour prior to each of the three main daily meals. The subjects were instructed not to change their eating habits nor physical activities. The results showed a significant weight loss (2.5 kg) with the help of glucomannan for eight weeks, without any changes in diet and physical activities. The serum cholesterol and lipoprotein cholesterol of low density were significantly reduced (21.7 and 15.0 mg / dL) in a group which was treated with glucomannan. There were no adverse effects in relation to glucomannan. GLUCOMANNAN CONTRIBUTES TO MAINTAINING OF NORMAL BLOOD CHOLESTEROL LEVELS Glucomannan may be helpful with controlling of blood cholesterol levels which was confirmed by the EFSA by endorsing the following claim “it contributes to maintaining of normal blood cholesterol levels.” For a beneficial effect one must enter 4 g of glucomannan per day and with enough fluids to avoid suffocation. A meta-analysis of 14 randomized clinical trials published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reveals positive effect of glucomannan on the level of LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. At the same time, no effect was observed on the effect of HDL cholesterol. The positive effect was already confirmed after 3 to 4 weeks of taking glucomannan. Interestingly, the analysis also showed a beneficial effect of glucomannan on the body weight.
